CETAG declares indefinite strike over unfulfilled agreements from January 2nd

CETAG begins an indefinite strike on January 2, 2025, citing government violations of signed agreements and unresolved arbitration awards.

The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has declared an indefinite strike effective today, January 2, 2025.This decision follows repeated calls for action, including notices issued on September 26 and December 23, 2024.

CETAG’s decision stems from the government’s failure to honour key agreements, particularly the National Labour Commission (NLC)’s compulsory arbitration award issued on May 2, 2023.

Key Grievances:

Non-implementation of NLC Award: CETAG accuses the government of violating Ghana’s Labour Act by refusing to implement the NLC’s arbitration award.

Delayed Salary Migration: The association has expressed concern over the 20-month delay in migrating college of education teaching staff to the pay structure of affiliate universities.

Unpaid Compensation: CETAG demands the payment of one month’s basic salary as compensation for 2022, as ordered by the NLC.

Delayed Appointment Letters: The association has criticized the delays in issuing new appointment letters for staff to complete their migration to the Controller and Accountant General’s Department’s payroll system.

Unpaid Allowances: CETAG has also raised concerns over the non-payment of 2023 book and research allowance top-ups for Akrokerri College of Education staff.

CETAG also criticized the NLC for its inaction in enforcing compliance with its orders and directives.

The strike action will affect all 46 colleges of education across Ghana, potentially disrupting academic activities and preparations for upcoming examinations.
